Lesson Plan

Description: The hardening of Pharaoh’s heart troubles many commentators. Some commentators address this theological problem by explaining that Pharaoh deserved to lose his free will (e.g. Ramban). Others answer by explaining the text in a literal manner (e.g.Sforno), that the term “hardening of the heart” does not denote a loss of free will. In this lesson, students examine four different approaches to this problem. This lesson deals with the text that describes the Ten Plagues (i.e. Exodus/Shemot 7:14-11), which covers most of Parshiot Va’era and Bo.

Authors: biggreenjewish.org

Age Group: 14-16, 16-18,

Format: Activity

Description: Environmentalism is one of many contemporary issues that people are concerned with and this offers an opportunity to explore the relevance of Judaism in today’s society. This session should also aim to engage the participants in answering the question – How is Judaism relevant to me today? How do I shape my Jewish Identity in a way that contributes to my own and the world’s needs?

The session should also offer an example of the continual development of Judaism and encourage the participants to see themselves as part of that ‘flexible tradition’ and consider how they will contribute to its development.
